Used to grab jobs from getafreelancer dot com but have since left and never re-activated my membership. It's not a bad place for starting writers. www.getafreelancer.com.

I am not a huge fan of this place; see my rant about them here.
I must admit though that I was able to "weed" through the many cheap-paying projects I cannot stand, to find a project owner willing to give writer's due compensation for their writing services. I actually won the bid on this project and will begin working on it Tuesday. Maybe they read my rant.
I also agree that get freelancers is perhaps a starting point for new writers to begin establishing themselves as service providers.
I would just caution new writers not to think that the only writing projects they have a chance of winning are the extremely low paying and insulting ones.
Ethical project owners pay writers respectable fees for their services, and they pay close attention to your bid submissions to see how well you paid attention to the details they included in their projects.
Read job details all the way through. If a project owner specifies that you provide an answer to his or her question in your bid, answer them! Even brand new and still relatively new writers often win bids here because they provided all the information requested by a project owner in their bid submissions.
